[DIY dollhouse kitchen]
Starting on a journey as a miniature dollhouse enthusiast can be quite overwhelming at first.
There are so many choices out there yet it can seem limited at the same time for adults.
What scale? 1/6th scale, 1/12th scale, 1/24th or much smaller?
Which style? Modern or traditional?
How big of a house, or will it even be a house?
Could it just be a room in a box? (Trust me this is just as fun as doing a whole house)
When I Google for miniature dollhouse kit, I usually stumble across a lot of miniatures for kids – which… seem like great fun, but a lot of us adult miniature enthusiasts are into admiring the look of it, the find details.
Imagining or planning that dream house, reminiscing the bygone days with traditional style dollhouses, or to “renovate” dollhouses on a whim, which isn’t easy to do with real houses.
[choices, choices]
So what to choose?
This is how I decided on where to start.
Size:
According to a poll I did in miniature enthusiasts groups, 1/12th scale (one inch scale) was by far the most popular.
Which suggested that there probably are more of 1/12th miniature pieces widely available and that they may be the easiest to start with.
If you want your miniatures to go along with dolls of 1/6th scale, 1/12th pieces would be way too small – you would need 1/6th scale miniatures.
Style:
Traditional style dollhouses and miniatures have always been popular, such as the Victorian style.
In the recent years there has also been a huge surge of popularity in modern style, with the fan base widening to all age groups.
Initially I was looking at pieces with Victorian styles and the antique feel but I quickly moved on to modern designs as I could relate to them more.
It really is up to you and your preference on which style to go for.
When you start looking for pieces, you will know what is your preferred styles!
Space:
I must note here, especially for the city dwellers.
If you are like me and don’t have much space to dedicate for the dollhouses and miniatures, you will probably struggle with having lots of 1/3rd scale and 1/6th scale pieces around.
My daughter and I love having some 1/6th scale items for her dolls, but 1/12th scale dollhouses suit us better as we don’t have a lot of space.
The reason I started making miniatures in 1/12th scale with paper is because they can be folded and packed away!
[Keeping the cost down]
I find that dollhouses are a bit like great apps – small pieces can be quite affordable.
But it starts to snowball quickly as you need a lot of pieces to fill the dollhouse and miniature rooms, and bigger pieces like dollhouse furnitures and miniature kitchen appliances can command serious price tags.
Good ways to keep on a budget is to check out the charity shops.
I have also seen some miniature items at some large Daiso stores.
Comb through the store aisles to check as they are not necessarily stocked in the toys section.
